Boyd Franklin Allen was born March 17, 1889 in Distant, Pennsylvannia to Alonza and Minnie M. (Shoemaker) Allen.  He became a coal miner at age 16 and spent a total of 40 years in the coal mines.  He then went on to being a construction worker and was also a home farmer.  He played pitcher position for the Oakland ball team from 1910 - 1920
